Petites is a fishing village on the Southwest Coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Like many of the old fishing villages of this province, Petites is only accessible by boat. It is just a few miles across the bay from Rose Blanche, which is about a 45 minute drive from Port-aux-Basques, the main port of entry for people coming to Newfoundland by ferry. At its peak, Petites was a vibrant community of over 200 people. It is home to the Bethany United Church, the oldest wooden Methodist church in North America. Unfortunately, the provincial government has recently announced plans to pay all the remaining residents of the community to relocate and discontinue all services. At that point, Petites will effectively become a self-sufficient summer community, since former residents will still have the right to occupy their residences. With luck, Petites Center for the Creative Arts will be unaffected as it was envisioned as a seasonal program from the outset. Houses in the community are connected by a network of footpaths as there are no roads or cars. From every vantage point there is a stunning panorama of rocks and water. It is a truly wonderful place to visit and reconnect with your creativity. |
